Located in one of the most underserved areas of Detroit, this neighborhood center is a place for the children, teens, and young adults of the Delray community to develop physically, academically, and socially.
The after school program offer physical activity in the gym and in the park next door including basketball, weight training, basketball, and volleyball as well as unstructured play. A comfortable game room has board games, ice hockey, foosball, and a piano. A computer lab is available for school work, personal project, or just entertainment. A full kitchen is available for preparing meals. And every Friday afternoon, the Detroit Public Library brings one of its bookmobiles next to the Delray Neighborhood House.
A staff of three, as well as various volunteers, assist youth with homework, run youth group discussions, and provide positive interactions with youth. While the Delray Neighborhood House services about 200 children per week (400 in the summer), adult members of the community also use the neighborhood house for special events, forums, and community meetings.
The City of Detroit Recreation Department owns the actual property and PCS is signing a long-term lease with the city to build an addition to the existing facilities which should break ground in fall 2003. The addition will allow PCS to provide more services with more recreation space, private counseling offices, a mini-police station, and a small theater-in-the-round.
