EPIC Summer ProgramThe Summer Day Camp fun takes place at the Hamtramck Neighborhood Center and Delray Neighborhood House.
The Summer Day Camp offers children the opportunity to be active in the
summer and have positive interactions with volunteers, interns, staff,
and their peers. Youth become engaged in physical activity, exciting field trips, and new
experiences. Our summer program enriches children during their summer
break while they are away from so school and as a result, their minds
are being nurtured rather than being idle. This concept ensures children
will not fall behind academically during the summer months.Recreational Activity Recreation
is a key component of a community's health and fosters social
development among youth. People's Community Services (PCS) provides many opportunities for recreation
and socializing for our community's youth. Youth have the equipment and facilities to participate in pickup games and open recreation. Each year, PCS provides recreation to nearly 2,000 neighborhood
youth at the various sites. Able to Play PCS
is proud to house a Boundless Playground at the Delray Neighborhood
House. This Playground allows all children to play regardless of their
physical challenges.
Team Sports PCS
sponsors teams in mini-leagues. Group sports are also conducted and
include basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer, and hockey.
Academic Engagement Developing
young minds is central for creating well-rounded, contributing adults.
Even when schools can do their job, we provide these exposures in a
relaxed atmosphere that can be more conducive to learning. In recent years, PCS has incorporated STEM activities to better prepare youth in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.
Tutoring & Literacy Staff
and college volunteers are available to help youth with homework and
problem areas every afternoon. Staff and volunteers will also spend time
on reading instruction with youth individually and in a group setting.
Being able to have one-on-one reading time with an adult is especially
helpful for youth that are not reading at grade level.
Technology - Computer Lab Each
computer lab has eight computers with high-speed Internet connections
(monitored for inappropriate material) and are provided for students to
do homework, use learning software, or just explore their own
interests on the Web. Arts & Crafts This
component attempts to be more than busy work, but also an exposure to
beginning techniques and history and is an outlet for youth's feelings. Activities for youth include painting, modeling, and trips to the
museum. Enriching Endeavors PCS
common rooms are cozy places to socialize and enjoy a game of
ping-pong, pool, foosball, air hockey, or any number of board games. Children also get quality interaction with adult staff in a structured
manner. Summer in the CityHigh
